TELLS 2024 Conference

3rd Annual International Future Education Conference

Keynote speech:

Generative AI and the Future of Education: An Open University Perspective

John Domingue

Professor of Computer Science

Knowledge Media Institute,

Open University, UK.

AI as a concept in computing has been around since at least Alan Turing’s work in the 1940s and 50s and over the last decade or so it is become embedded in our infrastructure supporting online search, banking, social media platforms, navigation and online entertainment. It has also begun to be used in education. For example, in 2012 the Knowledge Media Institute, the Open University’s technology R&D centre, developed OU Analyse, which is able to predict if a student is at risk of failing the next assignment or the course overall.

The end of 2022 though saw a step change in interest and activity in the AI arena with the arrival of the Generative AI platform ChatGPT. Since the beginning of 2023 the OU has been investigating how Generative AI can support teaching and learning and in this talk I will report on early results, including proof of concepts in the areas of content generation and digital assistants for students, the views of our students on these technologies, and outline possible future directions.
